Workshops and Local Experiences

In addition to the drop-in and on-your-own activities, Monday and Wednesday of the conference
provide attendees with opportunities to participate in workshops and local experiences.

The programs require pre-registration and have additional fees. Sign-up is during conference registration.
Any fees collected over actual expenses will be transferred to the conference scholarship fund.

    Join us for an opportunity to look at how interpretive theory and improv techniques can be used in everyday staff development. Through the lens of Sam Ham’s TORE Model, we will examine how to use team-building activities to support trust and develop rapport and effective communication between individuals, teams, and departments. Participants will receive tools that are adaptable to meet the needs of their staff and institution. Discover how daily team-building can change workplace culture, build connections, and foster motivation.

    How Does Your Garden Grow? Cultivating the Next Generation of Leaders Through Mentorship (1-2)

    A nonprofit leader with 15+ years of experience,  Kate Yancho, Executive Director of Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers and a member of the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, has put a strong focus on intentional mentorship through her role as supervisor, advisor, and colleague. Building out successful internship programs in multiple environments including higher education and nonprofit administration, she has learned a few things about helping grow the next generation of leaders and will share some tools of the trade. For folks in any position with the potential to mentor another individual.

    Get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of two of Kalamazoo Theatrical Gems. The tour will start at the Kalamazoo Civic Theater, built under Dr. John Upjohn's direction for his daughter, Dorothy Dalton in 1931. The group will take a 7-minute walk to the Kalamazoo State Theater, founded in 1927 by Colonel William Butterfield and designed by John Eberson.

    Cheri Emery, a local fine arts gallery owner for over 30 years, with a love of both art and chocolate, turned her passion for chocolate into a business. Cheri, along with her daughter, Ashley, also a chocolatier and graduate from KVCC's Culinary and Sustainable Arts Program, will demonstrate how their artful chocolate confections are made. Each participant will either make three turtles or one decorative chocolate bar to take home.

    Join the KVM collections staff on a tour behind the scenes! The bulk of the museum's collection is in permanent collections storage. Since the 1996 construction of the building, the 4th floor has seen some changes. Moving from pallet shelving to compact shelving in 2003 for smaller objects and ephemera, the most recent storage construction project was completed in February of 2024. The addition of high-density compact shelving along with other outside-of-the-box storage ideas has created a great new dynamic in storage. Find out more about the KVM’s collection of over 60,000 objects, and get a true glimpse behind the scenes.

    Get hands-on in our nationally recognized Restoration Center during this exclusive event.  Learn the tricks of the trade from our experienced volunteers, and see if you have the skills to restore WWII aircraft back to their former glory. Activities may include: a keychain riveting station, bead blasting, aircraft detail stenciling, safety wiring, and tours of our active restoration projects.

    Expanding Programmatic Practice: Creating Opportunities for Community Connection (1-4)

    Expanding Programmatic Practice is an opportunity to think through how we (as cultural organizers) create opportunities for artists/practitioners to engage with the public in new ways by aligning mission, community relationships, and space.  

    Participants will be led through the process of crafting public programming that (1) strengthens existing connections and builds new long-term relationships with community partners (2) creates opportunities for artists to try new forms of engagement with their work and (3) aligns to the mission and accessibility goals of the organization.

    Marking History: An Artifact Labeling Workshop (1-4)

    Join Christy Kincaid and Sarah Humes for a hands-on workshop designed to elevate your skills in artifact labeling. Participants will learn different methods for physically numbering artifacts and specimens, learn about proper materials to use, and gain confidence in making decisions on where to place a number on an object. This workshop will cover previous best practices and newer labeling methods covering both the pros and cons of different methods. Participants will receive their own labeling kit and gain experience numbering textiles, wood objects, metal objects, documents, natural history specimens, and photographs.

    Tour the state-of-the-art facility where guides will walk you through the history, and brewing process in Bells’ larger brewing operation. The tour will include three samples- from the beer that built the brewery, Amber Ale, to the all-around favorite, Two-Hearted.

    Start your afternoon at the 1895 Henderson Castle, which was owned by Frank Henderson, owner of Henderson-Ames Company. The castle is now operated as a bed and breakfast and spa. The tour will take you through the 11,000 square foot Queen-Anne Style mansion, and the breathtaking landscape. Then, take a stroll with Lynn Houghton, Regional History Curator at Western Michigan University’s Zhang Legacy Collections Center, through the rolling, naturally landscaped Mountain Home Cemetery. Founded in 1849, see monuments and learn more about the former residents buried there.

    Powerful storytelling plays a crucial role in impacting your audience to drive results.  During this workshop, we’ll dive into the element of crafting a powerful story and how video storytelling has evolved for today’s changing digital landscape.  We’ll also discuss how to implement the power of Macro, Micro, and Nana forms of video storytelling content across your different digital channels.  During our time together, you’ll also learn strategic opportunities for getting the best ROI out of your video project through content creation and distribution.

    Exhibit Designer at Mackinac State Historic Parks Keeney Swearer will guide participants through the Exhibit Design process. All elements of the exhibit design process will be covered including:

    • Concept design & basic flow floor plans.
    • Exhibit design including interactive and artifact integration. 
    • Graphic design and integration into 3D exhibit design. 
    • Designing and specifying museum grade object cases, graphic panels, and other exhibit elements. 

    Participants will leave the workshop with a basic understanding of the Exhibit Design process and the tools required to begin designing exhibits at their institutions

    Since 1986, the Black Arts and Cultural Center of Kalamazoo has provided a range of Black artistic and cultural experiences for our community, from theater to art exhibitions to jazz performances, and more. During the month of October, the BACC will have an exhibition of James C. Palmore, a founding member of BACC and a talented artist. Join us to hear about the history of our organization, how we achieve important community outreach, and how we collaborate with other diverse organizations in town. After our presentation, please enjoy the exhibition of artwork by James Palmore.

    Embark on a journey through time and taste with our historic drinking tour. First, experience the brewery that started it all. Bells initial 15-barrel system saw the first batches of Two Hearted and Oberon and is still in use today. Tour begins in the Eccentric Cafe and ends in the General Store. Beer samples included. Next, visit Dabney & Co to pay homage to historic Black mixologists. Learn how to make a mint julep, a recipe cultivated by 19th century bartender John Dabney. Tastings of 4 different Black-owned whiskey brands and insight into the history and flavor profiles of each. Walking to both locations. 21+only

    Join Lynn Houghton, Regional Curator from the Zhang Legacy Collections Center, on a walking tour of downtown Kalamazoo. Learn about the “Mall City,” the hidden house, and more on the rich history and architecture of  the buildings. The tour will end at the Ladies Library Association where all can enjoy an interior tour of the 1879 built structure.
