Museum Engagement Manager - Mason County Historical Society

Position Overview:

The Mason County Historical Society (MCHS) is seeking a dynamic Museum Engagement Manager to grow and retain the Society’s membership base, enhance group sales, and develop compelling marketing campaigns. This role also provides administrative and operational support to ensure the Society's mission of preserving and sharing Mason County’s history is achieved.

The ideal candidate will excel in managing membership data, developing creative marketing strategies, and supporting daily operations at the Society’s museums as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

Membership Management and Donor Engagement:

  • Develop and implement strategies to grow and retain membership.
  • Manage and maintain donor and member systems, including Donor Perfect, to ensure accurate tracking of donors and members.
  • Analyze membership data to identify trends and opportunities for engagement.
  • Assist with planning and execution of member-exclusive events and donor appreciation initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the executive director to develop and implement a strong corporate sponsorship program.

Marketing and Communications:

  • Manage the organization’s website and social media platforms to ensure the delivery of engaging and up-to-date content.
  • Direct the museum’s marketing strategy to increase visibility, enhance community engagement, and drive attendance to museums, gift shop sales, and programs.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of marketing materials, including print and digital media, social media campaigns, newsletters, and press releases.
  • Coordinate with the Executive Director to ensure consistency in messaging and branding across all museum communications.
  • Understand the organization's needs and develop marketing strategies, messages, and calendars that align with its interests and objectives.
  • Collaborate with external partners and media outlets to enhance the MCHS profile and reputation within the broader community and cultural sector.

Museum Management:

  • Assist with the daily operations of the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum during the open season (April to October).
  • Learn and share maritime history to provide visitors with an informed and engaging experience.
  • Ensure exhibits function properly and address any issues promptly with the appropriate personnel.
  • Supervise staff and volunteers involved in museum operations, providing training and support.
  • Coordinate facility maintenance needs with maintenance staff, external contractors, and the Executive Director.

Group Sales Engagement

  • Attend group tour trade shows to market the museums to group tour operators.
  • Collaborate closely with the program manager to develop and deliver tours and educational programs that enhance member benefits.
  • Engage with donors, members, and business partners.
  • Develop partnerships with local organizations to promote shared historical initiatives.

Collaboration and Organizational Support

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to meet MCHS goals and organizational priorities.
  • Provide leadership and support during special projects, campaigns, and events.
  • Participate in after-hours events and engage with donors and members outside of work hours by being approachable and interactive.
  • Contribute to all areas of the organization as needed, supporting operations and programming.

Additional Expectations

  • Support the planning and promotion of fundraising events, donor receptions, and membership drives.
  • Assist with logistics for public events, including setup, marketing, and volunteer coordination.
  • Assist with after-hours events and provide on-site leadership during public programs.
  • Contribute to all areas of the organization as needed to ensure operational success.
  • Maintain a professional and welcoming presence while interacting with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, museum studies, public history, or a related field is preferred, but not required.
  • At least 2 years of experience in marketing, membership engagement, or museum operations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools, social media platforms, and CRM systems such as DonorPerfect.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers is preferred.
  • A passion for history and a commitment to public engagement and education.
