DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

HOURS:                       
Part-time, up to 28 hours a week, with primarily day shift hours on the weekdays. Some evening, weekends and special event hours are required on occasion.
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
An employee in this classification works under the direction of the Chief Curator or his/her designee. The employee in this classification works with the Chief Curator to help manage the Museum’s archives.  Employee is also responsible for docent work, providing tours for visitors.
     
Employee interacts in a consistently pleasant and helpful manner to fellow employees, visitors, and citizens of the City of Dearborn and demonstrates the highest standards of internal and external customer service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts regular inventories of archives and performs reconciliation with artifact records. 
  • Manages and assures accuracy, security and integrity of collection records.
  • Oversees volunteers and interns working on Museum projects
  • Performs data entry of documents into Museum computer system using PastPerfect software and performs appropriate filing. 
  • Performs regular docent duties at museum buildings, providing tours, often on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Researches, develops and curates archival collections, writing articles for a quarterly Historian magazine on occasion. 
  • Responds to inquiries from museums, researchers and collectors.
  • Assists with Museum’s social media accounts, and promoting Museum events.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned. 
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Working knowledge of general philosophy, principles and practices of history museums 
  • Considerable knowledge of archival management, care, documentation and classifications. 
  • Knowledgeable of local and regional history as it applies to the Museum 
  • Knowledgeable regarding evaluation, research and the use of references sources.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to approximately 25 lbs. 
  • Ability to climb and descend ladders and multiple flights of stairs in order to access materials 
  • Ability to work in the presence of dust and molds in a non-air-conditioned environment 
  • Must have basic keyboard and/or typing skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other employees and the general public and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Some combination of experience related to archives, libraries, museums, or public programming required. Must have minimum 1-3 years in museums or similar institutions.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must submit to a criminal history check and drug screen
