Position Opening – Full Time

The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) seeks a qualified individual to serve as Senior Manager for Marketing.

The Senior Manager for Marketing, working under the direction of the Executive Director and CEO, is a newly created position at HSM. This position will lead outreach to new and existing customers and communities throughout the state of Michigan to promote our HSM’s membership, magazine subscriptions, conferences, educational events, and other programs and products. The position will also collaborate with our Director of Communications on external marketing initiatives, which may include advertising, electronic communications, mailed materials, and other duties as assigned. Regular travel within Michigan with an HSM vehicle is mandatory.

About the Historical Society of Michigan: The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM), the state’s oldest cultural organization, helps connect Michigan’s past to students, educators, historical organizations, and the public through educational programs, conferences, publications, awards, workshops, referral services, networking opportunities, and support for local history organizations. HSM is the publisher of Michigan History magazine, Chronicle magazine, The Michigan Historical Review academic journal, the Historic Michigan Travel Guide, and other publications.

Established in 1828, the Historical Society of Michigan is a non-governmental member-supported educational 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. HSM is not collection-based and does not operate the state museum or archives housed at the Michigan History Center in downtown Lansing.

Job Duties:

  • Develop strategies and tactics to promote HSM and encourage participation in the organization’s programs, events, and membership opportunities.
  • Travel frequently throughout Michigan to events such as senior expos, presentations at senior living locations, history related events, professional gatherings, and more.
  • Engage in regular public speaking engagements with varied audiences in Michigan.
  • Deploy successful marketing campaigns and own their implementation from ideation to execution.
  • Experiment with a variety of organic and paid acquisition channels like content creation, content curation, pay per click campaigns, publicity, lead generation campaigns, copywriting, and performance analysis in coordination with the Member Relations and Manager.
  • Build strategic relationships and partner with key industry players, agencies, and vendors
  • Collaborate with the Director of Communications to develop marketing material.
  • Collect and analyze audience data.
  • Measure and report on the performance of marketing efforts, gain insight and assess against goals
  • Operate digital marketing platforms as assigned, including but not limited to Meta Advertising and Google Ads.

Reports to: Executive Director and CEO

Location and Work Hours: This is an in-person position at HSM’s offices in west Lansing with up to one remote day per week. This position is expected to work 40 hours per week during the standard workday of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with minor flexibility in daily start/end times.

Salary: $43-46,000 per year based on experience. Includes health insurance, disability insurance, retirement plan, paid vacation, and other benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in marketing, communications, sales, or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit setting.
  • Strong public speaking skills are essential and the ability to connect with varied audiences both in person and via written communications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills.
  • Proven experience in identifying target audiences and in creatively devising and leading marketing campaigns across channels that engage, educate and motivate.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Extroverted personality who enjoys engaging with others on a daily basis.
  • Experience working with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Competency using Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
  • High level of problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Interest in Michigan history and/or interest in nonprofit organizations a plus.
  • Experience working with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop a plus.
  • Graphic design experience a plus (experience beyond online design tools such as Canva).
