Ask an Expert:
Cultural Appropriation -
What's the Problem?

Wednesday, January 26
1:00 pm

The appropriation of indigenous identity and culture has been an issue for tribes for centuries. From football team to butter to movies, and even the original MMA logo, the identity of tribal nations has been used in a plethora of marketing and media. This talk will discuss where appropriation occurs in American society and the harm it does.

Eric works to collect and curate historical materials pertaining to LTBB Odawa. Those materials are used to create exhibits, signage, publications, curriculums, programs and support the tribal government. Eric has experience working under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Eric currently sits on the Michigan Historical Commission and Little Traverse Conservancy. He is a past board member for the Michigan Historical Society, Michigan Humanities Council, National NAGPRA Review Committee and Emmet County Historical Commission.
